Hair today gone tomorrow!

Wands, smoothing, and curling irons OH MY!!! This ones for my lady guests. We tend to use lots of heat on our hair daily to create the hair we want. I know that back in the day these irons and such were not near as hot as what we use today. So in order to have the hair you do today tomorrow lets talk about heat protection. Some of the heat styling tools I use at Fringe hair salon can reach 450 degrees. I do not recommend any of my guests to use that high of temperature setting EVER! I always let my guest know to start out at a lower setting and move a little slower before rushing with a high setting and then going over the section over and over quickly ( like we all have done before). I also highly recommend some type of protection from the heat. Now if you get a smoothing iron that goes to 450 degrees and you plan on using that high of a setting there is nothing out there that will protect your hair from that high temperature so I suggest a lower setting. Fringe hair salon is a certified Redken salon and we carry all Redken’s hair care line. I would recommend if you blow dry and then use a hot tool on your hair to start with a cream heat protection like Satin Wear 02 by Redken. You apply a small amount to hair before you blow dry. Redken also has another heat protector call Duo Shield 06 that is applied before blow drying. We at Fringe hair salon use lots of the spray heat protectors before using a smoothing or curling iron for styling everyday hair and even formal hair styles. Redken has two spray protectors the first is Iron Shape 11 and the other is Hot Sets 22. Both of these products are sprayed throughout the hair before using your hot tool. One of the difference in each product Redken offers is the number. The number symbolizes the hold factor of the product lower the number the softer feel the higher the number the more hold it has.
Now we all know about heat protection and will not end up like the young lady making her hair tutorial where her hair falls off right? The service providers at Fringe hair salon in Sedalia want to make sure you know we love your hair just as much as you do and we take our job seriously. We continue our education with classes designed to further our knowledge in Redken and Pureology hair care products. Thank you for talking time to read the blog.

Behind my chair

Life behind my chair.

One of my little clients getting his first haircut.

Behind my chair is where I do your hair,
Behind my chair is where I can smell the fresh air.
Behind my chair I hear about your life,
Behind my chair I get to know your husband or wife.
Behind my chair is where I hear all your news,
Behind my chair I find out how much weight you plan to lose.
Behind my chair I get excited about your newest addition,
Behind my chair is where I find out the sadness of your fathers latest condition.
Behind my chair I am prepping you for the big day,
Behind my chair all day I will stay.
Behind my chair I am shown your life in photos,
Behind my chair we discuss all the what ifs and the who knows.
Behind my chair I am honored to be the one,
Behind my chair I get to meet your daughter or son.
Behind my chair I learn of your struggles with the day,
Behind my chair sometimes listening to all you need to say.
Behind my chair is where I feel all sorts of emotion,
Behind my chair is where I get to see all the commotion.
Behind my chair is where I stand all day,
Behind my chair is where your hair is my play.
Behind my chair is where I get to change your look,
Behind my chair my life can be turned into a book.
Behind my chair is where I feel the best,
Behind my chair I put your bad hair day to rest.
Behind my chair is where I truly love to be,
Behind my chair is something you really ought to see,
Because Behind my chair is something you can’t imagine,
Behind my chair is happiness only a stylist can fathom,
Because behind my chair is where I get to do your hair.

As a stylist for years my slogan when it came to selling a hair product was “I’m a stylist not a sales person!” Well little did I realize that almost 70% of my guest will leave the salon and go to wherever and purchase something “like” what I used on them. Fringe sales products that are designed to your hairs specific needs. Here is an example Sally wants a volume product and She goes to the store and pick one up and within a week of using this product her beautiful color that is only a week old is starting to fade. Sally will more than likely call her stylist and say “So I am not sure why but this time my color is just not looking like it did the last time.” For me I would start with these questions: “So Sally what are you shampooing with? What are you using to protect your hair from the heat your styling with if so what is it?” These are 2 of the most important products you can be using on your hair and if you’re not purchasing them from your stylist then your color service and or the condition of your hair can not be guaranteed by your stylist. Fringe uses products that are pH balanced for your specific hair needs and at Fringe we continue our education on the all the products we use. Keeping up on our education is important in the hair industry because it is constantly changing and it is important to stay educated on the latest trends. I had a conversation with a fellow stylist in my community about trying to sell products to my guest. She said “Susan you are the hair Doctor and the products are the Medicine. You don’t see people going to the Dr. and then just going out and buying what ever to get better???” So it got me thinking she is so right!!! I now have to speak up and at least give my guest the option of buying the products I use on them. Not all will want to purchase them and that is fine but the ones who will and are able to follow the simple steps on how to use them along with how to recreate the look I have given them will have a much easier time in doing so. We at Fringe have been educated in all Redken has to offer. As a stylist and a salon owner I feel that knowing what you are offering to a guest is the best way in presenting it so they know what is they are about to purchase. Fringe uses Redken color and we have all the hair care you are gong to need. Along with Redken Fringe has Pureology hair care products. As hair care professionals we are also up against black market products that are showing up on the shelves of our local retail stores. These products have been purchased from a 3rd party and sometimes are higher than you can purchase them at your salon. These products have sometimes more than likely been sitting around for a long time and are past their expiration date. Using a really old product is just as bad as using a product from your local retail stores. We guarantee all of products as well as our services at Fringe so if you are not totally satisfied with either feel free to let us know.

Hairs looking at you babe

Today I am going to cover a few hair salon basics. Some of the do’s and don’ts, some of the things you might be afraid to do with your hair, or afraid to say to your stylist. Have you ever gone to see a stylist and leave feeling stoked about your new style only to wake up, go to style it, and not be able to get it to look the same? SO FRUSTRATING RIGHT??? When you are a guest at Fringe Hair Salon it is ok to ask questions, in fact, we want you to! Don’t be afraid to ask, “So what is that you are using?” or “Can I watch you as you style this.” The key to being able to re-create your new style is knowing what products to use and how to use them. For instance, if you leave Fringe Hair Salon and are super excited that you have all this great volume you have never been able to achieve at home, you may be missing the key ingredient, a great volumizer. At Fringe, we like to describe ourselves as the hair doctors. We feel it is our responsibility to prescribe your hair problems with the right remedies. This is why at Fringe, we strive to educate our guests on what their hair needs are. It is ok to ask your stylist, “What did you use on my hair today?”Or “Do I need to apply this hairspray by a certain technique?” At Fringe Hair Salon, you have a right to know policy. That means you have a right to know what Redken or Pureology products we are putting in your hair and how to use it. Some people are afraid but as a stylist, or hair doctor, it is part of my job to educate my guests on what to use and how to use it. Otherwise, you may leave my chair, go to the drugstore, and just pick up whatever. EEEK! Then you will likely end up being dissatisfied with your cut and not be able to get the look you were wanting. We all know that is NOT good!
Now that we have covered you can and should ask Fringe stylists anything (only promising good results on hair questions though J ), I want to address a few things that I frequently hear from guests. The first one I hear guests say is, “I know you probably hate when I bring in pictures.” Personally, I LOVE it when a guest brings in a photo. A photo takes the guess work out of what I think it is you are describing versus what you think you are describing. It might be a good thing if we both have the same definition of layers! Now as a Fringe stylist I also need to consult with my guest on what it is they like about the hair in the photo and such. I also hear a lot of people say, “Well I did not wash my hair, you need my hair dirty, right?”; I could care less because I will more than likely shampoo your hair unless it’s not needed or the guest is in a hurry. We want to make sure you get that relaxing wash that so many guests enjoy at the shampoo bowl. Now formal hair styles are different, they stay much better when the hair is not freshly washed and super clean. If you have really oily hair or you can’t allow your hair to be slightly dirty, you can add some product to your hair to add some “dirtiness” to allow your hair to stay better.
I also want to express that it is very important that you be honest with your stylist. It is essential that we know the truth if you are asked about a previous color done to your hair; we need to know that what we are going to be doing to your hair isn’t going to damage it.
My last hair salon ‘do’ is we need to know if you have any problems or dissatisfaction with your experience. At Fringe, we are happy when our guests are happy; we need to know when you think we should have done something differently so that we can make your next experience great. Some people say they don’t want to hurt their stylist’s feelings; just know that Fringe can’t fix a problem we don’t know about. We also know that sometimes communication can be a little off and usually can be an easy fix.
I will finish up with a photo of one of my favorites (my daughter) with one of my newest addictions Control Addict hairspray by Redken.
